Hubbard teen’s family gives back to hospital that saved him

HUBBARD, Ohio (WYTV) – Colin Burdette’s accident happened one year ago Sunday.

When his mom, Molly, got the call her son was in an accident she thought, “He’s going to be OK.” Then she saw Colin’s injuries firsthand and knew it was going to be a long road to recovery–one that required Colin getting a medical helicopter ride to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.

“He broke almost pretty much every bone in his face. He broke both arms, lacerated his spleen, and of course, had a severe concussion,” Molly said of Colin’s accident, which occurred while he was riding an ATV with friends.

“Last thing I remember is my friend getting off the back ’cause he didn’t want want to get muddy, and I did a donut and sprayed him with mud,” Colin recalled of the harrowing accident.

Colin was put in a medically-induced coma and underwent a 10-hour surgery to repair his face. He went home a few weeks after the accident.

“After I got my jaw unwired, it was a lot easier because I started eating, and I started putting weight back on and my muscles got bigger,” he said.

Throughout the ordeal, Molly could not help but think of the doctors and nurses that helped tend to her son.

“I honestly think that Colin would not have healed as well as he did if we hadn’t gone to Akron Children’s,” she said. “I mean, he doesn’t have a scar on his face. He doesn’t have a scar on his body.”

Right away, the Burdettes knew they wanted to give back to Akron Children’s Hospital. They are running the Akron Marathon on Saturday, with the goal of raising $10,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital. Currently, they have raised $7,000 through the fundraiser.

The Haulin’ with Colin Relay team has some experienced and not so experienced runners, but everyone has the same inspiration — the youngest member of the team, Colin.

“He’s such an amazing source of inspiration. He really has helped all of us more than he’ll ever know,” said Colin’s aunt, Melissa Kerr, who is participating in the race.

Kerr, a veteran runner, said she knew she would always think of Colin during the Akron Marathon. He was in the hospital during the last race. And so, the family decided to make race day a new memory.

“I think it’s going to be fun. I can’t wait until I cross the finish line into the Zip Stadium,” Colin said. “Everyone is going to be there.”

The family knows Saturday is going to be emotional, but it is also a celebration a year in the making and a way to give back to those who helped Colin when he needed it most.

“One thing I loved was, [Akron Children’s Hospital staff] would say, ‘Colin, here’s what you need to do. They wouldn’t say, ‘Mom, here’s what Colin needs to do,'” Molly said. “They gave it to him. It was his injury, his recovery.”

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Police in Warren are looking for the person who shot 23-year-old Jarame Provitt Saturday morning.

Provitt can be heard on a 911 call obtained by WKBN moaning in pain, after he was found outside a house on First Street SW in Warren lying in a pool of his own blood, wounded seriously but not fatally.

“I know that this area in particular is a hot spot right now,” Warren Police Captain Robert Massucci said.

Part of the 911 call sounded like this:

  • Dispatcher: “Do you have any information on who shot him sir?”
  • Caller: “Yo, we about to just take him to the hospital, man.”
  • Dispatcher: “Who shot him, sir?”
  • Caller: “I don’t know, I was in the *expletive* house with my kids, yo.”

A neighbor took Provitt to Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where he briefly spoke to police before being flown by helicopter to Cleveland. Provitt is expected to survive and at last check was listed in serious but stable condition.

“We have several leads. That area’s been pretty hot for us recently as far as shootings go, several shots fired calls in that area, so we have several leads to follow up on, but as of right now, we do not have a suspect,” Massucci said.

Now detectives are still looking for whoever’s responsible for Saturday’s shooting. They’re asking anyone who might have any information to please come forward and contact Warren Police at (330) 394-2521.

FARRELL, Pa. (WYTV) – Farrell City Council voted Monday night to withdraw from the Southwest Regional Police Department.

The vote comes after months of negotiations between the two sides. The main sticking point was costs to service Farrell’s 4, 500 residents.

City Manager Michael Ceci said the city was paying $1.22 million for the policing but was looking to cut costs in  anticipation of a $250,000 budget cut, after a tax expires that was implemented in 1988 to assist distressed cities. The tax will expire January 2018.

A decision had to made by November or the city of Farrell would automatically be contractually obligated to the Southwest Regional Police Department for another year.

The city has already taken steps to create a civil service commission to hire a police chief and staff a police department.

Shenango Township withdrew from the regional department in 2015 citing budgetary issues.

With Shenango and now Farrell withdrawing from the department, the SWRPD includes Wheatland Borough and West Middlesex.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – More than 100 local business leaders came to Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center Tuesday morning with the goal of communicating what they need to do to improve the manufacturing sector in the Mahoning Valley.

They took part in the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s Northeastern OH/Western PA, Manufacturing Career Pathways Summit, sponsored by Hapco, Inc. and the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Collaborative. The summit, which included speakers, break-out sessions with manufacturers and educational exhibits, sought to bridge the gap between employers and job seekers in the manufacturing industry.

Manufacturing employs nearly 40,000 workers in the Oh-Penn region and is the third largest industry behind health care/social assistance and retail trade, according to the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition. But, the coalition said these industries are having difficulty filling the vacant positions.

This month, the U.S. Department of Labor gave Oh-Penn a $3 million grant to help manufacturers find skilled employees in the area to fill jobs. The organization’s goal is to place 300 apprentices in the next five years.

Jessica Borza, sector partnership coordinator for the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Collaborative, said recruiting students into the manufacturing industry is a major goal as well.

“Getting out into the schools and reaching out to young people to educate them about manufacturing career pathways,” she said. “We’re working with the education and training providers to make sure that they know what the skill needs are and are able to adjust their curriculum.”

Oh-Penn will take some of the feedback it received from industry leaders on Tuesday and use it to shape what the organization does in the future.
